🕷️ Spider-Man and the deal with the devil

What really happens in One More Day?

In 2007, Marvel Comics published the saga Spider-Man: One More Day, written by J. Michael Straczynski with editorial supervision by Joe Quesada.

It is one of the most controversial stories ever published about
Spider-Man.

🔥 The context: Civil War and the unmasking

Before One More Day, during the Civil War event, Peter Parker publicly revealed his identity.

👉 The world discovers that Spider-Man is Peter Parker.
👉 His enemies now know where to find him.

The result?

A sniper shoots for revenge… but the bullet hits Aunt May, leaving her on her deathbed.

😈 Mephisto's arrival

When all medical solutions fail,
Mephisto, a demonic entity often compared to the devil, enters the scene.

Mephisto proposes a deal:

I will save Aunt May…
but I will erase the marriage between Peter and Mary Jane from reality.

Not just divorce.
Not separation.

👉 The marriage will have never existed.

💔 The decision

Peter and Mary Jane discuss at length.
Their love is real, but Aunt May is the mother figure who raised Peter.

They finally accept.

And here something even more disturbing happens:

Mary Jane seems to negotiate a secret detail with Mephisto, never fully clarified in the comics.

🌪️ The consequences: disguised reboot

After the pact:

  • The marriage never happened
  • The secret identity is hidden again
  • Many events are "retouched" in continuity

In practice, it was a soft editorial reboot.

Marvel wanted to bring Spider-Man back to a more "classic" state: young, single, with everyday problems.

😡 Why do fans hate it?

Many readers consider it problematic because:

  • It erases 20 years of character development
  • It reduces Peter's emotional maturity
  • It uses a magical plot device to solve a narrative problem

Spider-Man has always been a symbol of responsibility.
Making a deal with the devil seems to go against his own motto:

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

🧠 Interesting theory

Mephisto feeds on hope and love.
Some clues suggest that the true goal was to destroy Peter and Mary Jane's happy future, because from them a child would be born who was destined to be a threat to him.

This detail has never been fully confirmed… but it remains one of the most fascinating hypotheses.

📚 Has it been undone?

Not completely.

In subsequent years, Marvel slowly brought Peter and Mary Jane back together, but the official marriage was never restored in the main continuity.

🎯 Why is it one of the darkest events?

Because it's not a death.
It's not a battle.
It's not a defeated villain.

It is the cancellation of a part of Peter Parker's life.

And that's what makes it so controversial even today.
